ICD-10-CM changes for FY2027

ICD-10-CM adds 190 new codes and deletes 30 billable codes for fiscal year 2027: 15 were subdivided into more specific codes and 15 were retired outright. A further 4 descriptions changed. All changes take effect October 1, 2026 and apply to discharges and encounters through September 30, 2027. There is no grace period — the code set in force is determined by the date of service.

These codes still exist in ICD-10-CM but were subdivided for FY2027. Each became a non-billable header, so a claim carrying one will be rejected for lack of specificity. This is the change most likely to cause denials, because the code does not disappear from a lookup — it simply stops being valid to submit. Replace each with one of the child codes listed beneath it.

These billable codes were removed from the classification and have no direct replacement. Any encounter on or after October 1, 2026 must be coded to a different, clinically appropriate code — check the Tabular List for the surrounding category before choosing one. A further 6 header codes were also removed; those were never billable, so they do not affect claims.
