An ICD-10-CM code on a bill, an explanation of benefits or a medical record describes how a condition was classified for administrative purposes. It is not a diagnosis, and it does not tell you how serious a condition is, what caused it, or what should be done about it.

Do not use this site to self-diagnose, to interpret your own medical records, or to make any decision about your health or treatment. If you have a question about a code on your record or bill, ask the clinician or the provider’s billing office. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, contact your local emergency services immediately.

For coders, billers and clinicians

Code selection must be based on the provider’s documentation and the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. This site reproduces the classification and computes supporting signals from it, but it does not and cannot determine the correct code for a given encounter.

• “Billable” means valid under the classification — that the code is at the highest level of specificity in its branch and is a complete, submittable code. It does not mean a payer will cover it, reimburse it, or consider it medically necessary.
• Derived signals are heuristics. Flags such as “unspecified” and suggested alternatives are computed by rule, not by clinical review. The rules are documented in the editorial policy.
• Coverage, medical necessity and payer edits are out of scope. Always verify against the payer’s own policy before submitting.
• Fiscal year matters. The code set in force is determined by date of service. This build reflects FY2027, effective October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.

Accuracy and the authoritative source

Data is generated from the official CMS and CDC/NCHS release, but errors in processing or presentation are possible. Where this site disagrees with the official release, the official release is authoritative. See data sources for the exact files used, and report an error if you find a discrepancy.
